ticos v krauts

tonight a few of us are going to watch the world cup game between costa rica and germany.
we're watching this at the goethe german cultural institute of boston (who promise $2 beer and pretzel. jah!) i can't decide whether to root for costa ricans, who have a special place in my heart, or the germans, because i will likely be surrounded by 150 of them. i may choose the germans, just to be on the safe side. also, of course, for my german friend jasmin.

i spent last night reading a book about 'your financial future' written for recent college grads to explain financial terms (IRA, roth IRA, 401k, home equity loans, etc etc) ... so now i'm TOTALLY freaked out. they say that to have a comfortable retirement, a person should aim to save TWO MILLION DOLLARS. what the hell? perhaps this is possible with some careful planning, but perhaps i should've started OH SAY THIRTY YEARS AGO, to get there? i'm ahead of the game with a pension and some savings, but still, how to save two million in the next thirty years is baffling. does that mean i can't have any new shoes?

oh dear.

then i went on to read another book i just bought entitled 'what every american should know about the rest of the world, hotspots, hotshots and incendiary issues.' a quick and easy (and somewhat subjective, but what isn't?) - started with iraq last night but fell asleep at israel/palestine. i think i'll read that slowly.

and eventually i'll finish lolita (nabakov), which i started a few weeks ago, maybe on beauty (zadie smith), and a few others that i'm partially through. i seem to have a problem finishing books. i like the idea of collecting them ... if only i could finish.

happy friday!
